What is the difference between a Training Management System (TMS) and a Learning Management System (LMS)?

A Training Management System (TMS) and a Learning Management System (LMS) serve distinct yet complementary functions within the realm of Learning and Development (L&D).

 

A TMS primarily focuses on the administrative side of managing corporate L&D programs. As a result, a TMS will provide functionalities that make it easier to gather training needs, submit training requests, build and track training plans, manage budgets, evaluate training courses, and much more.

 

A LMS primarily focuses on the delivery and management of educational content and learning experiences. With an LMS, users select and take training courses online through the platform.

 

Despite their differences, HR teams can employ a LMS and a TMS to provide a more flexible and robust learning and development program for their employees.

Why use a Training Management System (TMS)?

Training management is the HR specialty involving the largest number of administrative tasks. HR staff have to manage registrations and invitations, manage reminders, monitor invoicing, etc.
